Perkins the Braille Dog has Big Plans

Perkins the Braille Dog and Perkins Brailler

Perkins ponders Perkins

Meet Perkins!

I’m Perkins the Airedale. Carolyn Meyer is my buddy. I’m looking forward to being your guide on the soon-to-be-reworked Louis Braille School site. I’ll be helping out, as we explore kids’ questions about Louis Braille and the braille code.

You may see me checking in on Carolyn’s Braille Services once in a while, too. Carolyn’s Braille Services is the new site for my human’s braille transcription business. The Louis Braille School site will be a place to learn about braille, and the Carolyn’s Braille Services site will be about how businesses, individuals and organizations can get and use braille.

The other Perkins in this picture is a brailler. The Perkins Brailler, a kind of “braille typewriter,” was first created in the 1950’s to replace the older, noisy, less-efficient machines. Heavy and solid, these things don’t move accidentally. The Perkins Brailler got its name from the Perkins School for the Blind, where its original inventors were working at the time.

In case you’re wondering, I’m not really pondering the brailler. Caroyn put a small treat by the brailler and told me to “sit,” “stay,” and “leave it” until this picture was taken, and so I did, keeping my eye on the prize until I got the go-ahead to move. This big boy aims to please.
